A Pakistani-American growing up in Jersey City, Kamala Khan idolized Super Heroes like Captain Marvel, never dreaming she’d have the opportunity to join her role models in safeguarding society from the forces of evil. With an Inhuman ability to alter shape and size, the newest Ms. Marvel employs an idealistic attitude as much as any power to make the world a better place.
Kamala Khan would like to be normal.
Not to say that she isn't, but being a Pakistani-American girl in Jersey City had its issues. Her classmates and peers don't understand her customs and way of life and often tend to patronize her for sticking with it, seeing it as obedience to an outdated system rather than a close-knit culture that looks after each other. Kamala often prefers to write fanfiction about her favourite heroes - and her biggest role model, Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel. She finds her hobbies to be a refuge as she faces judgement from her peers and judgement from her parents. Her nerdy/geeky interests are frowned upon by her family, who see them as pointless and not worthwhile. Taking a passionate joy in heroes and their adventures, Kamala has completely embraced the way of the geek, enjoying all forms of fan media, memes and even signing up for the Carol Corps. She often thinks and uses internet-slang and references in her diction without fear because she is proud to be part of that internet community. However, after gaining her powers, Kamala finds her original assumptions about being a hero and fitting in to be far more complicated than she imagined. In fact, all they seem to do was make her uncomfortable and not like herself at all. She quickly recognizes that having powers means she has taken on a bigger role in life, a role where she can help and protect people, now that she has the means to do so. At first, she has a difficult time trying to understand her new powers, but with Bruno's help and her father's acceptance, she immediately gets back on her feet. Kamala knows when she's outmatched, but she never gives up. At most, she backs down for a while so she can come up with a new plan. Still unlearned in the ways of combat (and preferring not to hurt anyone), she relies on her own ingenuity (and the backup of her new sidekick, Lockjaw) to get herself out of impossible situations. That being said, she often reacts much like a sixteen year old would when facing off giant robots and crocodiles - with quips, geeky references and the occasional "ewwww". Kamala is eager, honest and forthright in her way of dealing with things and speaking her mind. Even with veteran heroes like Wolverine, she speaks up, wondering whether hurting people, even animals is the only way for a hero to get things done. She has strong protective feelings for her community, Muslim and otherwise and reaches out to her own generation because she empathizes with their feelings of being unwanted and unhelpful, feelings she herself is still struggling with from time to time. While she keeps her new superhero status a secret from her family (and feels guilty for it), she takes their support and advice to heart, fully aware that they want the best for her, even if they do not see eye to eye. Constantly working to improve her own abilities as well as her own "self", Kamala Khan isn't interested in simply emulating Carol Danvers and being a carbon copy of her. Instead, she wants to be the best "Kamala" there ever was, as Ms. Marvel, and make a difference, with or without fistcuffs.
